You’re Doing it Wrong Right

This is a post that I’ve wanted to bring to life for a long time. Ever since I started my fitness/weight loss journey, I have had many, many people tell me that I am doing it wrong. Now, let me explain, if I was hearing this kind of advice from a nutritionist, a personal trainer, or a doctor, I’d open my ears and try to adsorb every last word they say, but that is not the case. It seems that every person who is trying to tell me how to be healthy, is incredibly far from it themselves, and it really upsets me to have to defend myself and my lifestyle to anyone.

I have been told to try crazy diets that border on starvation, that involve eating canned tuna or sauerkraut for almost every meal and that water with cucumber slices is the key to ridding my body of excess water because it will make me pee more often. News flash, drinking any type of water will make you pee more often. Plus, my plain water in my Camelbak is doing me just fine, thank you very much!

I have been offered and repeatedly encouraged to try weight loss pills that are illegal in the United States. The person who offered them to me had them shipped from Hong Kong and ignored the fact that they have lead to heart attacks and strokes, in effort to find a quick way to lose a few pounds. Not to mention, the same person suffers from high blood pressure and is putting their life on the line for a quick fix. Just because a friend of a friend tells you something is a magic pill, doesn’t mean it really is. You can’t sprinkle anything on your food to make it less calories either. Sorry to burst your bubble, but those fries are a calorie bomb any way you look at it. Not to mention, they are almost completely devoid of the nutrients your body needs to nourish itself, because after all, that is the reason we eat.

I have been working my butt off for the last couple months. I work out regularly, I eat fairly well (this could always be better), but I’m a work in progress. I feel stronger and fitter everyday and I have even gone down a size in clothing. I feel amazing and I see my body changing. The process isn’t instantaneous like most people would like. It takes a lot of sweat and tears to reach you fitness goals, but I am getting there step by step.

So you can keep your diet plans, your pills and your magical waters because I’m not interested in doing it your way, my way is working just fine.

    • It\’s sad that people believe in these quick fixes. And it always seems like people have a story of a friend of a friend who got great results using it. Not likely!

  1. Good for you for sticking with the most effective way. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix to weight loss and getting healthy. Just keep doing what you’re doing!

    • Exactly! It gets so frustrating listening to the same people tell be about all these fads I need to try. No thanks!

  2. Amen, amen, amen! It’s just taking care of your health and being CONSISTENT with that hard work. NOT the unsafe quick fix. There is no magic pill or potion. Props to you for sticking by your guns and going after your goals the smart way!

    • Thanks so much! I wish that more people could understand that without hard work, you will never achieve your fitness goals. If there was a magic pull, I\’m pretty sure we wouldn\’t be having an obesity epidemic in our country!

  3. Keep doing what you’re doing! Live and be healthy! πŸ™‚

I love that quote: “You have to do what others won’t to achieve what others don’t” – Thanks for sharing it!

    • Thank you!! I might not get the results that someone on a starvation diet might be getting now, but I know in the end all the hard work will pay off!

    • Thank you! It feels great and ever though I can\’t flip a switch and be where I want to be, the journey is an amazing one!

  4. Good for you, girl!! What I’ve noticed as I work my way to my weight loss goals is that you hear one of two things: what you’ve heard in terms of “magic” diets and the…”I wonder how she’s really doing it” comments. I have a certain person in my life that always assumes that any person that loses weight in a fairly quick way (even if it’s absolutely 100% healthy) has an eating disorder. (And yes, she suffered from one.)

I’ve learned that the people who offer up advice (especially without asking and especially when it goes against what you’re doing) tend to be the ones that don’t know what they’re talking about. I also have a friend who’s trying to lose, ask me for advice, and then tells me her doctor recommended a quick diet and that she doesn’t care. The whole point in losing weight should be about becoming healthier. (The superficial reasons are always there, of course.) What’s the point in losing weight if you could harm yourself doing it?

    • I hear you! I have a person like that in my life too. The person who offered me the illegal pills for weight loss. I don\’t understand why anyone would literally risk their life and put dangerous substances into their body to lose weight. If you\’re dead, it won\’t matter if you\’re skinny or not!

  5. Thank you for saying what needs to be said!

I get tired of people telling me there’s only one right way to lose weight or one right food. Newsflash to them: I do what works best for MY body. Yes, I’ve still eaten pizza and crap but I’ve also LOST 41 pounds in 6 months. My diet is probably 90% clean and 10% crap most of the time. If I decide to eat something less than healthy just once or twice that’s my choice, not someone else’s.

    • Amazing progress! I hear you! Just because I enjoy something less healthy won\’t ruin all my hard work. It\’s all about moderation. I hate when someone tells me I shouldn\’t eat something. It happened not to long ago. I had ordered a salad with seared tuna while my dining buddy ordered a huge meal with steak potatoes gravy, the whole nine. When the bread basket came I had a roll and they informed me that bread was bad for my diet. I really wanted to be like mind you own business and look at your own plate soaked in gravy! So annoying.

  6. Yes! I couldn’t agree more! I wish I could explain to people that by drinking their “magic shakes” they may loose weight but they will need to maintain those shakes FOREVER. I have always been a fan of the “old fashion” way that no one like because it’s the slowest {yet most effective} way: proper nutrition and exercise. No special potions or pills required! YOU ARE DOING IT RIGHT!

    • Exactly! It\’s great that those pills and shakes are a short term fix, but I don\’t want to deprive myself just to gain all the weight back. Thanks lady! πŸ™‚

    • Thanks! It is way more fun my way! And I get to eat real food and have a ton of fun working out. Why would I want to give this up?!

  7. I can 100% relate to this post. I have had people tell me, on a regular basis, that my way of losing weight is wrong, that they have a “better, faster” way to lose. Right, because eating healthy and exercise can possibly be wrong. Yes, it takes time, but it’s not like all the weight was put there overnight. Weight loss is hard; emotionally, physically, mentally- but if you do it right it’s completely worth it.

Good for you for coming out and tell the world to shut their mouths if they disagree with the way you are taking control of your life.

    • I think the thing that people don\’t understand most is that you didn\’t gain the weight overnight, so it won\’t come off overnight either. It takes time and anything that says it will make you loose it overnight, prbably isn\’t worth your time and money!

  8. Such a fabulous post! unfortunately, negativity or misunderstanding is something that we all encounter in our fitness journey’s. It’s so important to continue to do what feels right to our unique selves!

  9. Wonderful post! It’s always amazing to me how people can tell us what is right or wrong when we are doing it right for ourselves. Granted there are a lot of “wrong” ways to lose weight, very unhealthy ways but when you’re leading a good healthy lifestyle to achieve your goals you know that’s right! Good for you! Keep doing what you’re doing cause that is the “magic pill”

    • So true! If there is a \”magic pill\” than it is eating right and exercising. It might not work instantly, but it does work!
